Program Length: 1 YEAR.

Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Development Studies offered by the University of Johannesburg

Students must complete five courses in the Development Studies Honours programme: three are compulsory and two are electives. One of these courses is an independent research paper carried out under the supervision of an academic in the Department.

There are five courses in the Honours programme:

The first course, offered in the first semester, is a compulsory theory course that delves into the under girding of Development Studies by adopting an approach based on what we call ‘historical political economy’. It combines classical social theory and political economy with history and policy analysis, tackling the academic and policy discourses that have evolved in this discipline in the last fifty years within their global political and economic context.

The second course is also compulsory and offered in the first semester. It consists of two papers, namely Methodology and Statistics.

The third compulsory course is an independent research paper completed in the 2nd semester, based on fieldwork confronting a problem or issue in Development Studies. The topics for this course are developed in the methodology course.

The other two courses can be taken from a wide variety of other Development Studies courses – for example ‘Nature and Society’, offered jointly with Anthropology – and can include another social science offering related to Development Studies at the Honours level.
