DURATION

  • The curriculum shall extend over one academic year of full-time study or two academic years of part-time study.
  • The degree must be completed within the following maximum period from the first date of registration:
    • Full-time studies: Three (3) years.
    • Part-time studies: Four (4) years.
Purpose of the learning programme

This qualification has been approved in terms of the new Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework (HEQSF)

To develop in candidates the skills necessary for tax consultancy within the legal and accounting professions and/or senior tax positions in business or with the South African·Revenue Service (SARS). In so doing, the following competencies are achieved:

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding at an advanced level of the legislation and related case law in the field of tax.

An ability to critically analyse and evaluate sources of law and literature in the field of tax

The ability to identify and define practical and theoretical problems, uncertainties· and inconsistencies in the field of tax and generate appropriate solutions using critical and creative thinking that advance ethical professional practice.

An ability to effectively present and communicate or defend findings, insights, solutions and consequences of any solutions (orally and/or in writing) to specialist and non­-specialist audiences using appropriate academic and professional discourse.

An ability to effectively interact and engage in debate with a peer learning or professional group.

Completion of a treatise under expert guidance in which the ability to generate a new systematization of existing knowledge is demonstrated or whereby the student is able to demonstrate an ability to access, process and manage information in order to conduct a comprehensive review of leading and current research in an area of specialization to produce significant insights.

Appropriate mastery of the relevant research tools, techniques and methods of inquiry in the field of tax.

Effective management of one-self and demonstration of an ability for independent, self-regulated learning as they advance their knowledge, understanding and skills required for specialised professional practice in the field of tax.
